Bill Viola has been working for more than 30 years of video tapes, video installations, sound environments, electronic music performances and television productions. His video installation takes the viewer in image and sound worlds that are created with the latest technology and by their precision. Since the early 1970s, Viola involved in exploring the medium of video to investigate the phenomena of sense perception. His work is based on an examination of fundamental experiences of human existence such as birth, death and Bewußtswerdung, as reflected in the sources of the Eastern and Western spiritual traditions, including art and Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism and Christian mysticism. He has made a significant contribution to the establishment of video as a central medium of contemporary art and thus its spectrum expanded in terms of technology, content and historical references.
